A new national survey by Rasmussen Reports shows 66 percent of those questioned oppose allowing Mexican trucks on U.S. roads. Additionally, 52 percent want to keep “Buy American” rules in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which requires stimulus money to go mostly toward American businesses and contractors.
The North American Free Trade Agreement calls for trucking lanes to be opened up in the U.S., Mexico and Canada to trucks beyond the traditional border crossings.
Although free trade and some business advocates support the idea, U.S. trucking firms are concerned about being undercut by cheaper Mexican rivals and truck safety issues.
The trucking saga has dragged on for years, with roadblocks presented in Congress by both Republicans and Democrats.
