 Green jobs booming in California

Employment in green businesses grew 36 percent in California between 1995 and 2008, almost triple the rate of total job growth in the state, according to a report by nonpartisan group Next 10.

The report details different areas of California:

• The Bay Area had 7,000 jobs in energy generation and the highest job concentrations in energy research, hydrogen and energy consulting. More than 5,000 jobs in the Bay Area are connected the solar power business in 2008.

• The San Joaquin Valley has the top concentration of jobs in wind, while geothermal jobs are concentrated around Sacramento and the North Coast region.

• Though the Sacramento area had the biggest jump in green jobs (87 percent) during the period studied by the report, the Bay Area had the most green jobs total, with 41,674 in 2008.

• Los Angeles followed with just under 40,000 green jobs, and Orange County came in third, with under 20,000.

• Jobs in services, particularly environmental consulting, make up 45 percent of the green jobs in California.

• Manufacturing makes up 21 percent of green jobs in the state.

• Between 1995 and 2008, green businesses in California increased in number by 45 percent, and job growth in the sector outpaced the state’s overall 13 percent growth rate considerably.

• In just one year, between January 2007 and January 2008, green jobs grew by 5 percent while total jobs in the state fell by 1 percent.
